WARMING CENTRE ACTIVATED AT CAMPBELL RIVER COMMUNITY CENTRE

WARMING CENTRE ACTIVATED AT CAMPBELL RIVER COMMUNITY CENTRE - NOVEMBER 2022

In response to extremely low overnight temperatures forecast for Wednesday, November 30, 2022, the City of Campbell River and Campbell River Coalition to End Homelessness, are activating a warming centre at the Campbell River Community Centre. The centre will be activated at 8 p.m. on the evening of November 30 and run to 7 a.m. on December 1, 2022.

The City has activated an Emergency Operation Centre to support this event. The warming centre will be staffed with individuals who have experience working with people experiencing homelessness to ensure support is provided to those attending the centre and accessing this service. Funding for the centre is provided by the Province through Emergency Management BC and the City of Campbell River.

“During winter storm events, a warming centre provides people experiencing homelessness or those living outdoors during extreme weather the shelter that they need,” said Mayor Dahl. “Thank you once again to the community for your patience as we adjust programming at the Community Centre to provide warmth and shelter during this winter storm.”

Groups with private Community Centre bookings will be contacted by the City if the warming centre will affect their programming.

The activation of a warming centre was approved for the evening of Tuesday, November 29, 2022. However, a shortage of trained staff and volunteers being available when the weather warning came into effect prevented the centre from opening and operating safely. Thank you to the tremendous efforts of all staff, volunteers and partners for their role during this activation.
